Twitch & YouTube chat

Chat panels bring a stream’s messages into your VR workspace. They are separate from the keyboard’s VRChat chatbox output.

  1. Open Screens on the wrist menu, then Add chat.
  2. Choose Twitch and enter the channel name.
  3. Add the panel and wait for its connection state to become live.

Twitch chat connects as a guest. No Twitch login or API key is required by AstralOverlay’s current implementation. This is a read-only viewer, not a way to send messages to the stream.

Need a key? Follow Get a YouTube API key for the Google Cloud links and setup steps.

  1. Choose YouTube in the Add chat card.
  2. Paste the live video’s URL, or enter its video ID.
  3. Supply your own YouTube API key, then add the panel.

Use the specific stream’s link rather than a channel homepage. A channel link is recognized but is not a valid substitute for the live video.

The key is masked in the interface. A newly entered key is saved when you actually add the chat, not when you abandon the card. The card also provides a way to forget the stored key.

The panel settings include:

  • Text size and brightness.
  • A see-through background.
  • Emotes and badges.
  • Hiding commands and highlighting your name.
  • Message fading: never, after 30 seconds, or after 60 seconds.
  • Curvature, automatic hiding, locking, and input blocking.

Lock prevents grabbing, moving, and resizing. Block input lets the laser pass through the panel. They serve different purposes.

Screens and chat panels are saved together in layouts. Loading a layout replaces both kinds of panel.

If Twitch reconnects, give the panel time to recover. For YouTube, check the live video’s link, the supplied key, and the panel’s error message. Read-only chat still depends on the platform’s service and network availability.
